August Moon Drive In Theater The Latest Attraction To Nashville East Bank

As a Nashville real estate agent, I try to keep my eye on parts of town that are experiencing — or soon will experience — a renaissance. And I think it’s safe to say that the East Bank of the Cumberland River is firmly poised for hotness.

This week’s big news: the August Moon Drive-In, a huge indoor replica of a classic drive-in movie theater, in the works at the intersection of James Robertson Parkway and Interstate 24.

Details on the project from Variety: “The $10 million project aims to conjure a summer night in the sixties under a 40,000-square-foot, air-supported dome, complete with simulated starry sky, seating in modified classic cars and food service (with a full bar) focused on artisanal takes on comfort-food standards like burgers and milkshakes.”

If things go as planned, August Moon could be open during the second quarter of 2018, with 18 screenings a week bringing in around 350 movie-goers, checking out new and classic films on what’s touted as the “largest non-IMAX movie screen in North America."

It’s a kitschy addition to living in Nashville, for sure, but it also sounds really fun, and like a definite draw to a part of the city that, aside of the stadium, hasn’t been a steady destination.

As the next years roll by, August Moon could be just one of several high-profile destinations in the general East Bank area, too.

Last month, news started rolling in about the huge plans for River North, a high-rise development with residential space, office space, hotels, dining and shopping on 105 acres of land along the East Bank. It’d be shouting distance from August Moon, and a straight shot east across the river from Germantown. The renderings, like the one below, definitely show a massive change (and an exciting one) to what’s been an industrial expanse for a long time.

River North and August Moon both join the huge Topgolf Nashville entertainment center already in the works, taking over 13 acres at Cowan and Jefferson. It’s slated to open in late summer this year, with competitive golfing games, dining, event space, a rooftop terrace and more.

I’m a golfer, so I’m looking forward to this one (related, I wrote somewhat recently about Hideaway at Arrington, home to one of my current favorite golf courses in Middle Tennessee and, honestly, anywhere else). Friends who’ve been to other Topgolf locations tell me these are designed to cater to non-golfers, too, and offer a fun introduction to the sport.

Looking at this trio of high-profile projects, I imagine I’ll look back at this post in a few years and feel amazed by how much has changed on the previously sleepy East Bank in Nashville.

Thinking about exploring areas close to the East Bank as you look to buy a new home in Nashville? There are a few residential corners close by, like McFerrin Park on the East and Salemtown on the west side of the Cumberland, that could put you close to all the fun that’s to come.
