Buying A Home On A Golf Course
Watching the Masters? Love Golf? Want to live near it every day?
Every golfer aspires to live on a golf course, right? My obsession with the game dictates that I would LOVE to live on a gorgeous country club. A glimpse of my handicap would have most homeowners running to their insurance agents claiming they saw Allstates “Mayhem” on the teebox. After a few, errr, “errant” shots, it got me thinking, “who the heck is responsible for wicked slice lying 5 in someones living room?” It also got me pondering WHERE is the best place to buy on a golf course?
I did some digging and saw A LOT of threads on this question.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
Most golfers would offer up that it is the homeowners responsibility. After all, they traded the relative peace of traditional neighborhoods for the chaos theory that is living on a golf course. While no golfer would ever intend to take out a window, I have to believe it happens more than it doesn’t, especially on a resort course where the average, high handicap golfer chooses to play.
If you watch the PGA tour, fans trust the pros so much they will stand IN FRONT of the same golfer hitting out of the rough that put the ball there in the first place. Doing the same for the average golfer is essentially playing Russian Roulette with your life.
After watching players slicing a few into the serenity of a culdesac and running to their cart like a teenager who just TP rolled a tree, I wondered the outcome? It seems to me that if the homeowner FOUND the offender and got confirmation, that the cost would be borne by the golfer. Now, in most cases, this would be impossible, and the homeowner would face the cost of repair.
Knowing that most that live on a golf course will NEVER find the responsible slicer, what would be the best solution?
My knowledge of the game would suggest the following:
- Before you buy, look at where the house is in relation to the hole. If the home is behind the tee box, it’s unlikely to get hit. But it’s going to get hit all the time if it’s 150 yards out on the right. Why the right? Because most bad golfers are habitual slicers….like me
- If you choose to live on a par 3 by the green, choose the LEFT hand side of the green. Most golfers will push it right.
- I would NEVER live on the side of any dog leg. Why? Most golfers are barbarians on a dog leg. If they see a dog leg right, they will try to impress their buddies by going OVER the dog leg. The natural result will be a hole in your plate glass window, not a hole in one.
- The best place to buy would be the left hand side of any par 4 or 5, anywhere under 200 yards from the tee box. Most golfers are right handed and will slice right, not left.
