There’s an event coming up this week that’s particularly close to my heart and that, coincidentally enough, is focused on literal matters of the heart: The 2014 Greater Nashville Heart Walk, set for Saturday, Oct. 4 at Vanderbilt University.

The purpose of this 5K walk is to raise awareness about and funds for the the American Heart Association's efforts to combat heart disease — from supporting and promoting groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research to helping doctors prevent and treat cardiovascular disease and getting life-saving information about heart disease and risks to folks around the country.

At this year’s Heart Walk, I’m supporting Team Dane, and sharing love for a little man who, in just under 10 months, has shown himself to be one of the strongest, most resilient and inspiring Nashvillians you’ll come across.

Dane was born in January with a congenital defect called Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and within a few days, had to undergo complex heart surgery — the Norwood procedure, which included extending his aortic arch and placing a shunt to help ensure proper blood flow — then another surgery in May. As you can see above, Dane’s had his fists up for that fight, and this awesome little guy continues to be an inspiration to me and many others. You can read about Dane and his loving parents, Celia and Jeremy, at CaringBridge

Dane is just one of many who’ve been helped by the American Heart Association's work, too. One in 100 children are born with congenital cardiovascular defects, and the AHA supports research that saves lives daily. Adults around the country benefit from their efforts as well, and there’s a huge need — cardiovascular diseases and stroke account for the loss of more than 800,000 people in the U.S. every year. That all underlines why the Greater Nashville Heart Walk is an event I'm passionate about and proud to support.

The basics about the 2014 Greater Nashville Heart Walk:

When: Saturday, Oct. 4; activities begin at 8 a.m., walk begins at 10 a.m.
