It’s a new month, and I have a suggestion for how you can start it off with a new love in your life.

Once a month or so, I remind friends here on the blog that I’m willing to sponsor a dog adoption or foster through Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control. When I adopted my dog (and best friend) Ella more than a decade ago, my life changed for the better, and I got inspired to encourage (and help) other Nashvillians to have a similar experience by welcoming a shelter dog into their lives.

This month, I’d be overjoyed to sponsor your pup adoptions, but MACC has already taken care of it. Through August 8, their Hot Dogs and Cool Cats Mega-adoption Event includes waived adoption fees.

Events like this happen in part out of need. At the top of the month, MACC was at total capacity, with more than 200 pets waiting for their forever families to come take them home. This first weekend of August, Nashville came out with lots of love — 71 furry friends went home. And that thrills me. Let's keep it going!

If you’ve been thinking about bringing a new friend home, head by 5125 Harding Place this week to meet one of the wonderful animals there, and save that adoption fee (usually $90, which includes deworming, heartworm test, spay/neuter and rabies/license fee) for treats and toys and other stuff to spoil your new family member. (I rounded up some of the best Nashville pet shops if you need suggestions for where to shop.)

Here are just a few of the sweet pups waiting for a new family:

How could I not point out Ella? She’s a grown lab and doberman mix with a great name and the sweetest eyes you’ll find this side of my Ella.

If you’re looking for a younger guy, Bailey — a lab and beagle mix — might be your perfect medium-sized, medium-grown choice.

Don’t let his name color your opinion — young rat terrier mix Joffrey is a royal sweetheart.

Lucky is an Australian cattle dog mix, and he’s hoping to live up to his name.

Simba is a grown lab and German shepherd mix with a seriously infectious smile.

You can see it in his eyes: This lab-mix dude is full of, and in need of, lots of love. And who can resist loving on Ol’ Tater!

Take a look at the other MACC pets up for adoption now — and please let me know if you end up taking home a new best friend this week. I love hearing about happy shelter dog endings!
