Mid Century Ranch Houses Open This Weekend In Nashville

For last week’s Open Houses roundup, I took at look at homes in the area inspired by (or built upon the tenets of) Federal and Georgian architecture, which traces way, way back — 1700-1800 or so. Looking around this week, I’m seeing some great properties that come from a building school that’s just a hair younger: the mid-century ranch.

It’s not totally unfair to blame Mad Men for the more recent resurgence in ranch love, but appreciation of ranch homes has long had the opportunity to flourish here in the Nashville area — there are more than a few neighborhoods built up from the ’30s to ‘60s, cute brick ranchers as far as the eye can see, still standing proudly all these years later.

The point of ranch design had a lot to do with communing with nature and with our families — they’re low-slung buildings, usually with lots of nature-inviting windows, living areas blending into one another. Inside, we tended to see a lot of bright tiles, knotty pine paneling and homey brick fireplaces. And although a lot of the mid-century ranches you see on the market in Nashville now have had a lot of that detail stripped out, you’ll sometimes find an untouched time capsule.

I found a mix around the area, welcoming house hunters in this weekend.

First, the broader picture:

And then my picks:

116 Marita

Goodlettsville, TN 37072

Yes, you can find a well-kept home large enough for a family in the Nashville area for under $150K, it just sometimes takes a little bit of a drive. To, say, Goodlettsville (really only a 20 minute or so trip). Check out this cute ranch, built in 1965 and with just shy of 1400 square feet to play with — it’s nicely renovated, so if you’re not looking for projects, you’re set. (But you do have some cute ‘60s tells in the kitchen cabinets.) Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

674 Brewer Dr.

Nashville, TN 37211

Crieve Hall is one of the Nashville neighborhoods that has the best stock of mid-century ranches. Some purists think painting the red brick is a crime, but I think they made a great choice with this 3-bed, 2 1/2-bath 1966 property — the subtle grey and white trim give those great windows a chance to pop. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

4845 Corning Dr.

Nashville, TN 37211

Although it’s been totally renovated with contemporary finishes, this 1956 Crieve Hall home’ll still let you live out some brand of your Mad Men dreams — there’s a pretty awesome bar in the rec room. (And the front picture windows? Swoon!) Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

479 Hogan Rd.

Nashville, TN 37220

More in Crieve Hall… this one, built in 1955, is a great example of the low-slung/lots-of-windows approach. It has a little bit of Prairie style, too, with the horizontal band of small windows out front. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

2420 Mcginnis Dr.

Nashville, TN 37216

Something closer to your period piece, in Inglewood: The paneling is still there (though tastefully painted), as are original bathroom tiles and kitchen cabinets. If you want your 1950s home to feel 1950s — but meticulously kept — here’s your property. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

4215 Morriswood Dr.

Nashville, TN 37204

The front facade of this ‘50s home in Southmeade gives you a big ranch touchstone from first look: those big floor-to-ceiling windows out front, giving a clear view to the huge, level yard. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

{mls: 1710498}

701 Brownlee Dr.

Nashville, TN 37205

The unassuming ranch exterior in this 1955 West Meade home belies its modern interior: Upscale renovations put it squarely into 2016. Everything’s redone, from the kitchen to the baths, and very tastefully. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

Are you on the hunt for a ranch home? Or looking for something totally different? I’d love to help you track down the perfect place — give me a call or drop me an email, and tell me about what you need!
