Yet another accolade to be proud of: Nashville just landed at No. 16 on Amazon’s annual list of the top 20 most well-read cities.

There are plenty of Prime members among us, I’m sure, but I think our well-readness has a lot to do with a) Nashville’s fantastic library system b) our growing home team of indie bookstores and c) regular events hosted throughout town that give ravenous readers a chance to meet authors, talk about books and all-around celebrate the written word.

I recently wrote a post about Nashville’s independent bookstores, and today, I’ll follow that up with a nod toward some events/event hosts that put storytelling on a pedestal, and make being a well-read Nashvillian more social.

Events for voracious readers in Nashville

Parnassus Books Book Club and events

Green Hills’ Parnassus Books is a beloved hub for Nashville readers, so naturally, they keep a stocked schedule of events to cater to those folks, including free Book Clubs that meet the third week of each month (simple setup: buy the chosen book, read it and come by 3900 Hillsboro Pike, Suite 14, to join the discussion). They also plan/contribute to author events with locals and visitors, both at the shop and around town, so week after week, there’s no shortage of opportunities to revel in the written word among fellow well-read Nashvillians. Check out a calendar of events at the Parnassus Books website.

East Side Storytellin’

Chuck Beard, the owner of locally focused East Nashville bookstore East Side Story, has been hosting free, bi-monthly East Side Storytellin’ events since 2012, inviting local writers and musicians to share the same stage for an extremely Nashville-centric night. Writers like Alice Randall and Robert Hicks have participated; musicians have included Angaleena Presley (of Pistol Annies), debut season The Voice faces Elenowen and many others. These go down the first and third Tuesday of every month; The next one is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at The Post in East Nashville (1701 Fatherland Street), with writer Linda Barnickel reading, and musician Tanya Montana Coe singing. More about East Side Storytellin’ on the East Side Story website.

The Porch Writers Collective events

At its core, Nashville’s The Porch Writers Collective was created to support writers, with learning opportunities and mentorship and more. But their regular events tend to be for avid readers as much as avid writers. One example: Their Lit Mag League, “a community of readers and writers who meet every other month to discuss a recent issue of a literary magazine” (next one is July 13, but it’s already sold out). True Stories: NSFW

If the name didn’t give it away: This one’s not for the pearl-clutchers, since things could get salty. The regular True Stories: NSFW events also aren’t reading events, necessarily — they’re focused on storytelling in the broad sense: spoken off the cuff, written then spoken, whatever works. Founder and host Kristen Chapman Gibbons encourages participants to tell true tales based on a theme — the next one, on June 10 at 7 p.m. at the Actors Bridge Ensemble Theatre (4610 Charlotte Avenue), works on the theme of “surprise.” It could definitely get interesting. For more, visit the True Stories: NSFW Facebook page.
