Spend Black Friday Finding Your New Best Friend At MACC

Did you know that black dogs are far less likely to be adopted than other-colored pups, and that because of that, they’re euthanized at a much higher rate nationwide? (NBC Nightly News did a piece on it earlier this year, featuring Nashville’s own Emmylou Harris, who leads dog rescue Bonaparte’s Retreat and is the proud owner of a black rescue dog herself.)

Folks throw out a lot of thoughts about the reasons behind this trend — misconceptions about black dogs being mean, black dogs not showing up as well in photos — but ultimately, whatever’s behind it, it’s a sad reality that I wish would fade into the past.

Like last year, Metro Animal Care and Control is doing their part this year to help show due love for adoptable black pets, hosting a Black Friday Adoption Event on Friday, Nov. 28 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you stop by MACC at 5125 Harding Place that day to meet a new best friend, the adoption fee is waived for black and mostly black pets. Otherwise, adoption fees for dogs are $25, cats $5 and kittens $10.

Just a few of the adoptable black dogs hoping for a forever home at MACC right now:

He’s a young pit mix who already has a festive holiday red neckerchief. Click to learn more about Manny.

Sweet puppy girl Shirley is also a pit mix, and she’ll bring fun puppy energy into your life. Click to learn more about Shirley.

She’s a grown Labrador Retriever with those tell-tale sweet lab eyes. Click to learn more about Dixie

A young lab with, as you can see, a lot of personality. Click to learn more about Dekota.

If you’re thinking about expanding your family over the holidays, I hope you’ll stop by MACC. Dog rescue is a subject that’s close to my heart, and if you can’t make it for Black Friday, I’m willing to sponsor your rescue at another time. I’d love to help these dogs find a home — drop me a line and let me know about your plans.
