Nashville Area Open Houses With A Little Something Special

There’s a little bit of a science to finding home listings that appeal to my clients — I’m given a wish list with practical points, like bedrooms and bathrooms and area and square footage, plus a budget range. But ultimately, what makes a homebuyer choose a specific place, more often than not, has to do with emotion.
It’s a feeling you get when you walk in — that sense that, coming through the door at the end of every day, it’ll feel welcoming, and comforting. Like home.
A mix of things can inspire that feeling — the calming openness the high ceilings inspire, the perfect playroom for the kids, the way the sunset peeks through the tree-lined property. But what it usually boils down to: a little something special that fits you perfectly.
That little something special is going to be different for everyone, but for this week’s Open Houses roundup, I picked out some properties that called out to me as having unique features that’ll grab the right buyer and refuse to let go.

6017 Woodland Hills Dr.
This family home close to Brentwood is spacious (more than 3,000 square feet, with 5 beds, 3 1/2 baths and more than an acre of property) and well kept, but what strikes me is that second-story deck. It gives the front facade a unique look, and the fact that it’s accessible from three rooms makes it uniquely functional, too. Open Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.
502 N 17th St.
That something-special sensibility is what tends to draw people to historic homes — the personality in the original hardwoods, the workmanship in the built-ins. And this remodeled 1930 Craftsman in East Nashville is full of that stuff, from a gorgeous built-in hutch in the dining room to period-perfect trim throughout. The standouts: nearly floor-to-ceiling exposed brick around the bedroom fireplace, and the incredible sunroom, with ample skylights, beams and spanish tile that add up to a total sun-drenched knockout. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.
845 Belton Dr.
There’s a lot of home here in West Meade — almost 5,000 square feet, all completely rebuilt in 2012. The folks who brought this place down to the studs and started again definitely had designs on impressing the cooking-inclined: The open kitchen has super high-end Viking appliances, and the stone fireplace just off to the side would definitely make those long hours of making holiday meals a crazy kind of cozy. The clincher for me on this one, though, is the master bath, with a standalone tub right beside another stone fireplace, underneath a sparkling crystal chandelier. If you don’t feel fantastically pampered in that setting… Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.
9813 Sam Donald Rd.
I love the rustic warmth of a log home, but with some of them, that warmth can cross over to feeling dark and stuffy. Not so with this large log retreat — click through the photos: It manages to feel bright and airy, even while you’re encompassed by big, rough-hewn beams. The extras here are many, too: recording studio, detached workshop, sunroom — not to mention total privacy, on 15 acres of wooded beauty. Open Saturday 1 to 4 p.m.
302 3rd Ave S.
It’s hard to know where to start with this circa-1818 Franklin masterpiece. Suppose the beautiful porch balustrade and gorgeously tall front door set the mood, and it goes from there. What stands out to me: exposed brick here and there — a kitchen wall, a bathroom wall — that gives perfect, periodic pops of warmth. (The location in Historic Downtown Franklin doesn’t hurt, either.) Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.
