Inaugural Nashville Beefsteak Set For New Germantown Eatery Von Elrods Beer Garden

A few weeks ago, in my roundup of Nashville beer gardens and beer halls, I mentioned my eagerness to try out Germantown’s brand new Von Elrod's Beer Garden and Sausage House.


If I don’t make it beforehand, I’ve just found the perfect excuse to head over there: November 2’s Inaugural Nashville Beefsteak.


Beefsteak history


If you’re not familiar with the Beefsteak event concept, it has a colorful history, tracing back to the mid-1800s. Food & Wine outlines what to expect succinctly: “Gallons of beer. Never-ending beef. No utensils.”

Back in the day, these massive feasts were largely fundraisers for charities and politicians, and aside of the buttoned-up formalwear attendees put on during at least one era in Beefsteak history, they were pretty brutish hangs, with hot rooms entirely full of men pawing at red meat, downing endless ale steins and wiping greasy hands on greasy aprons. 


The Inaugural Nashville Beefsteak, meanwhile, is set to be a little more broad, culinarily and otherwise. Women are welcome, and your Sunday Best isn’t a requirement (cocktail attire/business casual is the recommendation).


Massive amounts of beef will definitely be in the house, though — Bear Creek Farm in Leiper's Fork is providing an entire steer, and a collection of Nashville’s best-loved chefs are offering various preparations and a bunch of extras.

Those chefs: Along with Von Elrod’s’ Jason Brumm, Gray and Dudley’s Levon Wallace, Lockeland Table’s Hal Holden-Bache, The Farm House’s Trey Cioccia and Two Ten Jack’s Jess and Trey Benefield will be in the kitchen, working on finger foods (which’ll include fresh-baked pull-apart pretzel rolls, house-made potato chips, whole-roasted fall vegetables and giant chocolate chip cookies made with Olive & Sinclair chocolate and caramels).


To wash that down, Nashville craft-beer standard-bearers Yazoo will be sharing four unique brews in half-liter pours (word is at least one’s going to be from their “Embrace the Funk” sour beer series). Spirits and wine at a cash bar, too.


Given the tradition and it being Nashville, there will, of course, be live music throughout the night, too.

Early-bird tickets are available now for $90 (they’ll go up to $100 when those are gone), and admission includes unlimited food, a stein to keep refilling and a custom apron to keep your clothes and eating utensils (i.e. your fingers) clean. No mention, but I’d hope a basket full of TUMS is somewhere nearby too.
