This 1,5500-square foot Leipers Fork cottage has served as a rental home for vacationers for the past two years. Advertising it to potential overnighters, the description reads, 5519 Joseph Street defines the eclectic. If you don't enjoy windows to the world, rust, paint splatter, vintage concrete, well worn and Scottie dog scratched floors then The Cottage may not suit you. However, if 1500 square feet of the unique has some modicum of appeal then I suggest further exploration.

The cottage lies in the only residential neighborhood in the village centre, and comes with a fabulous detached studio. Its current owners say that As a vacation rental home, [this property] has been a stellar income-producing asset. Built in 1950, the house includes three bedrooms and one bathroom, hardwood floors throughout, an updated kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, and a renovated bathroom with custom tile work.

The yard is hemmed in by a charming white picket fence, and the driveway is paved in gravel. (I read something on recently that said there's nothing like the rugged crunch of gravel to welcome you home, and that clicked with me. There really is something about a gravel driveway that feels welcoming, and this home is a good example of that.) The driveway leads right up to a studio apartment that is nothing short of amazing--from the double sets of twin doors painted lipstick red to the ivy crawling up the exterior to the corrugated tin ceiling. I just may like the apartment even more than the main house. Do you like how I did that there? Main house? It sounds all kinds of filthy rich. But what this place really is is modest and charming. It's a place that really feels like home.
