Cafe Fundamental: The Most Necessary New Eatery in Nashville

There's a new brunch and lunch spot in East Nashville! Cafe Fundamental. The bright little cafe is situated across the street from The Family Wash in the space that once held the short-lived greek restaurant Zavos.

And it's fundamentally awesome. Flaky, fresh, French pastries with chocolate and almond and blueberry filling? Check. Insanely decadent burgers with a side of perfectly thin, crispy, salty fries? Check. Hot coffee and a full bar? Check. I went for brunch recently and so haven't yet gotten to check out the lunch menu, but everyone I went with freaked out over the brunch offerings, which included a selection of omelettes and a quiche du jour, in addition to a strip steak and that burger I mentioned. (See menu below.) The most raved about item on the menu: the Duck Confit Hash with poached eggs.
Oh, and then came the dessert parade--a queue of house-made ice cream sandwiches that included chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream, lemon sugar cookie with citrus ice cream, and some sort of blueberry cookie/blueberry ice cream sandwich. There are no words. The lemon ice cream sandwich topped the cake.

The Cafe Fundamental website reads: "Chef Jamie Watson brings his passion for cooking and teaching to East Nashville with Cafe Fundamental. Coining his cooking style 'southern classique,' he combines his classic French training with Southern influences."
Yeah, boy!
And the prices are super reasonable.
Go, go, go!
