This week is inarguably the East Nashvillest of the year: Starting today, the annual Tomato Art Fest takes over the neighborhood’s central hub of Five Points, with live music, food, art, vendors and tens of thousands of locals and visitors celebrating the fruit we all tend to think of as a vegetable.

The fest is in its 13th year now, and its growth as a Nashville festival destination has kind of mirrored East Nashville’s growth — every year, more and more people know about it, and more and more people want to be a part of it.

If you’d like to hit the fest, tonight (Friday) there’s a preview party at Art & Invention Gallery that’ll let you check out the fest’s celebrated Tomato Art, and some live music going. But the bulk of the festival is Saturday, and there’s definitely enough to do/see to make a full day of it. Check out the full rundown of activities on the Tomato Art Fest website.

Since it’s Tomato Art Fest week, it felt like a given to focus this week’s Open Houses roundup on East Nashville. More specifically, I wanted to give a peek into one of the coolest things about the East Side: the diversity of homes you’ll find there. Modern lofts, historic Victorians, cute mid-century cottages… really, almost whatever kind of architectural taste you might have is represented. And there’s a broad mix of Open House options in the neighborhood this weekend.

First, the wider Open House picture:

Then, my East Nashville picks:

1310 Riverside Dr.

Nashville, TN 37206

You get a ton of style for the money with this cute Tudor up in the Rosebank area — arched doorways, spectacular fireplace, updated kitchen and lots of other touches that bring the 1938 home into modern use without gutting its historic aesthetic. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

219 11th Street S, #219

Nashville, TN 37206

Drawn more toward modern/industrial style? This condo a stone’s throw from Five Points gets plenty of cool points, with exposed ductwork, sleek metal stair rails and more, plus a huge garage, which is a major bonus right there in the heart of things. Open Saturday 1 to 4 p.m.

{mls: 1753836}

1514 Gartland Ave.

Nashville, TN 37206

This remodeled 1911 Victorian is a perfect picture of what people love so much about Lockeland Springs: beautiful historic homes with all the charm that comes with that — original fireplaces, huge neighborly porch, clawfoot tub — in walking distance from a big selection of East Nashville’s food/shopping/nightlife. This home’s in beautiful shape, and the location’s tough to beat. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.

{mls: 1755521}

909 A Potter Ln.

Nashville, TN 37206

If you’ve been here a minute, this isn’t news to you, but: New construction is plentiful in neighborhoods that are close to downtown, like East Nashville. You’ll see a wide variety in that mix, from small to large, simple to high-style. This one is larger than most, at almost 3000 square feet, and has some nice unique touches, like the cedar shakes and painted brick exterior, the statement wall and barn doors in the master, coffered ceilings in the living space… really cool backsplash in the kitchen too. Open Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If spending your weekend exploring East Nashville gets your mind set on living there, let me know — I’d love to help you find the perfect place on the East Side!
