Nashville Open Houses That Beam The Beauty Of Shiplap
by TJ Anderson
Digitally paging through the Nashville Business Journal this week, I came on a little bit of home design love that was right up my alley: this piece on “What you can learn from Joanna Gaines and her signature brand.”
If you don’t know JoJo, she’s half of the star power on HGTV show Fixer Upper, and probably (definitely?) single-handedly kickstarted the shiplap craze that still has homeowners and designers in full thrall.
If you don’t know shiplap, it’s a kind of tongue-and-groove-ish wood siding generally used for barns/outbuildings, also used in walls for older homes. Joanna and her husband Chip find a lot of it in reno projects in Texas, and they’ve made stylish use of its pleasing horizontal lines/texture, leaving it up instead of tearing it out, and often painting it white. As America fell in love with the look, builders and buyers started installing shiplap in homes all over the place. Including Middle Tennessee. (Including my new home — I’m a fan.)
Below, I’m focusing this week’s Open House roundup on shiplap. Because how could I not?
First, the broader picture.
Then, my shiplappy Open House picks:
1223 N 6th St.
Nashville, TN 37207
New construction in Cleveland Park with lots of style, and from the pop of blue in the kitchen backsplash to custom striped subway shower tile and ample use of shiplap — you’ll even find some dressing up the ceiling. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.
614 Benton Avenue
Nashville, TN 37204
You don’t need to go full Joanna to make a strong statement. This Wedgewood Houston home’s half bath gets a big style boost with just a little light-wood shiplap. Personally, I think it takes the space from standard to spectacular. Open Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.
2112 B Carter Ave
Nashville, TN 37206
This seems like the subtle shiplap application of choice lately: Bringing clean and classic lines to the fireplace. It looks great in this East Nashville home, echoing the exterior siding and picking up the lines in the kitchen’s white subway backsplash, too. Open Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.
1441 14th Ave. S.
Nashville, TN 37212
A really cool shiplap use, in the 12 South/Belmont area — the kitchen, from floor to ceiling, pantry to vent hood, gets the treatment, following through to the island, just with a different color/texture. The white shiplap, white cabinetry and white backsplash tile show how a monochromatic palette can still have a lot of energy when you mix up textures. Open Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.
4419 A Lone Oak Rd.
Nashville, TN 37215
For this large Green Hills home (4400 square feet, with 5 beds and 5 1/2 baths), they gave the dining room some extra appeal by cladding the walls in crisp white shiplap. That and the large statement chandelier set the room apart, in a great way. Open Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.
Feel drawn to any of these homes? Into a totally different aesthetic? If you need some help tracking down a home that suits your style perfectly, reach out and tell me about your wish list — I’d love to help!
