HGTV stars Jonathan and Drew Scott — better known as the Property Brothers — have spent a lot of time in Nashville in recent years, overhauling Music City homes for their main Property Brothers show, and offshoot Property Brothers: Buying + Selling.

It’s been fun to see our city and its homes spotlighted on the home renovation-focused network, on those shows and several others. But I’m that much more a fan of the brothers' commitment to our city (and others) as ambassadors for Habitat for Humanity’s “Home is the Key” campaign, focused on helping renters take the leap into homeownership.

Property Brothers kick off ‘Home is the Key’ campaign in Nashville

The Scotts, alongside Habitat Humanity representatives, partners and volunteers, kicked off the new nationwide Home is the Key campaign this week right here in Nashville, beginning on two homes for new Nashville homeowners: moms and longtime Nashvillians Amanda and Ashlee. (Day one pictured above, from Habitat's social media.)

As with all Habitat builds, for this campaign, the future homeowners team up with a big crew to literally raise the roof on their new homes, putting in hours of sweat equity before taking the keys (and taking on the mortgage). The Nashville “Home is the Key” homes should be complete by the end of this month.

In a city like Nashville  where housing costs are regularly outpacing wages — the work that Habitat for Humanity does is quite literally life-changing, something that isn’t lost on the Scott brothers.

“Owning your own home — it’s not even just the American dream, it’s a human dream, it’s a family dream,” Jonathan said in a Habitat for Humanity release. “It’s something that we think everybody should have the right to and access to, and Habitat for Humanity is who does it the best.”

Devotion to Habitat’s mission earned Jonathan and Drew Scott a rare designation as “Habitat Humanitarians,” an honor shared by just four other folks: country stars (and quite Nashville-connected stars themselves) Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, and former President and First Lady Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

Pitch in on ‘Home is the Key’ efforts

If you’d like to keep up with the progress on the new “Home is the Key” homes in Nashville, follow along on Habitat for Humanity’s Twitter feed — they’re sharing photos and tidbits as the future homeowners, Property Brothers and other volunteers drive nails and set screws.

And if you’re inspired to pitch in on the organization's efforts, you can donate to Habitat to Humanity through habitat.org.

Super easy way to add a little extra to your support: Program partner Nissan (whose North American headquarters is here in Franklin, Tenn.) is also donating $1 for every time the hashtag #HomeIsTheKey is shared on social media (up to  $250,000). So you can show your Habitat love with a donation, by volunteering, or even with a simple tweet.
