The Home Design Trends Of 2017 According To The Pinterest 100
by TJ Anderson
Like Google, Pinterest offers a really deep, borderline creepy look inside our hive-mind, regularly compiling the search and share trends that go through their digital hands. Pinterest being Pinterest, it gives a particularly interesting view into our design/creative leanings, since users busily pin and save things that catch their visual interest/spur inspiration.
At the end of every year, Pinterest gathers what they’ve learned in the Pinterest 100, showing trends they expect to make big showings in the following year, from parenting to food to home decor.
The latter, of course, always grabs my interest. Below, some of the home-design items this year’s Pinterest 100 points to, with examples found on the market in Middle Tennessee now, to illustrate.
“Farmhouse style is the new shabby chic,” Pinterest says, and that definitely isn’t a surprise — probably more than a little due to the rise of Fixer Upper’s Joanna Gaines, contemporary farmhouse cool has been on the wish lists of many of my clients this year, and I wasn’t about to complain. Taking the welcoming aesthetic of a classic farmhouse and giving it some updated style: definitely worthy of the hype.
Woodn’t you know it
Thought wood as a wall-decor element was falling out of favor? Nope. Rustic wood, my beloved shiplap — it’s still earning the love, according to Pinterest, so don’t expect bare walls to be a favorite in 2017.
We’re huge on hygge
This isn’t a home-design item, necessarily, but it does feed into how we approach decor. The Danish word hygge seems to be on everyone’s lips lately, even if they don’t know how to pronounce it (it’s hue-gah). Pinterest saw hygge's stock rise 285 percent in 2016, so it’s fair to expect it to inspire design in homes across the land in the coming year. It’s a vibe, really — comfort, coziness, being wrapped up in a fleece blanket by a fireplace, figuratively if not literally. I get some of that out of the above study — the wood cladding warms up the room, and the overstuffed love seat adds extra huggy hygge.
Navy blue is red hot
They think it’s the “new black” for home decor, but more to the point, I think it’s the new white — we’ll probably be seeing more and more kitchen cabinets (and islands, like the one here) in deep hues like navy, instead of the all-bright/all-white kitchens we’ve been getting used to over the past handful of years.
Copper’s still cool
Shiny steel remains popular for fixtures, but other metals — copper in particular — have been on the rise in recent years. And Pinterest says interest in copper was up 90 percent in 2016. It’s not hard to go outdated/wrong with copper, but smart, stylish choices — like the light fixtures above, from a property in Franklin — are gonna be big.

Eyes on acrylic
Standing apart from the cozy farmhouse/hygge vibes, clean and clear acrylic is apparently having a moment too — Pinterest saw lots of love in 2016. From frames to furniture (like these bar stools in a home on the market in Nashville), expect to see (or not see, as it were) this material in homes more and more in the coming year.
How do you feel about the design-related items in the Pinterest 100 this year? Find yourself pinning any of this kind of stuff, or are you feeling like bucking the current trends?
