Where to Eat

Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant is the classic answer and it’s classic for a reason — Southern comfort food and live music most nights, right on Main Street. Gray’s on Main is the move for a nicer dinner, in the old Gray’s Drugstore building with a speakeasy downstairs. For coffee and a slower morning, downtown has no shortage of good local spots worth wandering into. Order the fried chicken somewhere at least once. Non-negotiable.

Where to Shop

Main Street is lined with boutiques, antique shops, and galleries that actually feel local, not like a strip mall wearing a costume. This is where you find the one-of-a-kind gift, the weird cool antique nobody needed but everybody wants, and the boutique that always somehow has exactly the thing you didn’t know you were looking for. Budget more time than you think — it’s a slow-wander kind of street.

Where to Spend a Saturday

Start with breakfast downtown, walk Main Street, and make time for the Franklin Theatre — a beautifully restored historic movie house that still runs films and live shows. If history’s your thing, Carnton is a real Civil War-era plantation home with a genuinely moving story, not a roadside attraction. And if you’re around at the right time of year, the Main Street Festival in the spring and Dickens of a Christmas in December turn the whole downtown into a walkable event.

Why It Matters If You’re House Hunting

Downtown Franklin isn’t just a cute day trip — it’s a huge part of why people move to this area in the first place. Walkability, community events, a farmers market, real local businesses instead of chains.
